Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is a temporary period of teaching under supervision by a person who is training to become a teacher.  The aim of this teaching practice is to know and understand the ins and outs of the teaching process while giving us opportunities to observe the performance of master teachers to learn creative teaching methods and reflect on those methods and develop them to be used inside and outside the classroom.

During TP 1, I was involved in a wide range of teaching strategies such as classroom observations, peer teaching, micro teaching, self-reflection, and meaningful follow-up dialogues with colleagues and teachers in practical settings, lesson and unit planning, practical experiences, problem solving, and the use of technology in teaching.

My teaching practice gives me the practical experiences that allow me to apply what I learn in our theoretical courses through direct teaching practice in authentic classroom settings. The objectives of the teaching practice is prepare lesson plan and materials, discover own strength and weakness, gain benefit from constructive feedback, develop fundamental techniques of teaching and develop skills, exchange and perceive new ideas

Peer Teaching

Peer teaching is a platform where I am able to assess other teaching. Here I can think critically and grade each other’s teaching practice which results in a more efficient classroom setting. Assessing other’s teaching employs me to improve my understanding of course materials as well as improve my metacognitive skills. It allows me to understand the mistakes that I have made and can correct any problems in future assignments. It allows assignments to be graded soon after completion with feedback. Teacher's evaluation role makes me focus more on the grades and feedback.  A study by Sadler and Good found that students who self-graded their tests did better on later tests. I could see what we had done wrong and were able to correct such errors in later assignments.

Observation

Observation plays a pivotal role in practice teaching.  Our supervisor has given me an opportunity to
observed five slots of class within the BRAC Institute of Language (BIL). These observations has
given me a chance to familiarize my own-self with such things as the course materials that the
teachers used, the teaching methods and strategies the teachers used, how s/he interacted with
students, how the students respond and interact with the teacher and among themselves, how they
created a positive atmosphere for learning, on the strategies and procedures used by the teacher in
setting up activities, on the way the teacher gave instructions and explanations, and how s/he gave
feedback to learners.
